We treat a large number of back injuries.
Lower back pain:
Low back pain is caused by several common pain generators.
- Facet Joints
- Intervertebral Disc Injuries (slipped discs)
- Sacro-iliac (SI) joint
- Sprains (involving ligaments and joint capsules)
- Muscular Strains
- Basic Alignment Issues
In addition to these various issues are degenerative changes. These changes occur within the weight bearing and supportive structures we all need and use during lifting and general daily activities. The degenerative aging process is a factor that affects all of us.
The study of back related pain, diagnosis and treatment was Dr. Aspegren's main focus during his residency under Dr. James M. Cox, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. All of his research and work on clinical skills, developed into a skill set that Dr. Aspegren continues to use and build on today.
Research has found manipulation to be one of the most useful tools for treating lower back conditions. We use the two most frequently studied forms of manipulation: Diversified and Flexion-distraction. Both have more research backing their use than any other techniques. Used in conjunction with a diagnostic focus of patient history, physical examination and imaging studies (when needed) they make for a potent treatment approach.
After manipulation, we commonly use exercise to assist in strengthening and overall recovery. Patients perform independent, personalized home exercise/stretching programs to help speed the recovery process.
In addition to exercise and manipulation for back complaints, we may use acupuncture. In certain cases, acupuncture can be a very effective tool, helping to increase the rate of recovery and reduce pain levels.
